Preis_Steve_11Dear Desert Meadows Community,

After a forty one year career in education I will be retiring on June 30. The district I joined twelve years ago is not the district I leave. Dr. Johnson and I were the first administrators hired by Dr. Ron Dickson in the spring of 2005. Under Dr. Dickson and Dr. Johnson, Laveen has become one of the top districts in the county, and in my eyes the best in the city of Phoenix. We have seen steady growth on state assessments, and because of our community support the resources are top notch. I look forward to visiting in the future, and hearing how Mr. Ketcham has brought even greater success to Desert Meadows and the Laveen community.
In the present I have good news to share. Our third grade scores have arrived and I am proud to say that we scored above the state average in language arts and Desert Meadows outperformed all Laveen schools in math and language arts except for Vista, the Accelerated Academy. Scores for our other grades should be reported to us late next week. When the state gives the word scores will be shared with all of our families. I am confident that we will continue to hear good news.

Why choose Desert Meadows?

LEARN

Desert Meadows School strives to help our students improve academically every year as well as to develop their social skills so that they can become productive members of the community.

To facilitate learning we focus on first developing fluent readers through systematic phonics instruction. As the students progress through the years, teachers follow a curriculum map ensuring the students are acquiring the higher level learning skills that will lead to their academic success. We use data to target areas that need interventions which are provided through daily interventions, tutoring, and sometimes Saturday school. Interventions do not stop in academic areas that are lacking, but  include students who are ready for more rigorous challenges. By seventh grade our goal is to teach students algebra and by eighth grade they will move on to geometry.

Our social goals focus on teaching expectations that will assist our students in all walks of life. Our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program not only sets those expectations, but teaches the students what they look like.
