There is “lots2love” about school lunch and that is the theme of this year’s National School Lunch Week.
Cafeterias will be providing free lunches during the week of October 15 to all students to encourage them to try the many nutritional meals cafeterias offer. The Child Nutrition Department will offer a special menu that includes heart-shaped chicken nuggets, soft pretzels, and potatoes.
All meals are prepared to federal nutritional guidelines and include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. The menus are specifically designed to provide nutritious meals for growing children. Visit www.laveeneld.org/menu for more information.
Desert Meadows School preschool students finished their first unit of “Who we are” and made paper statues of themselves to express how individual and special they are.
Students brought home outlines of themselves and, with their families, listed all the things that make them special. The statues were returned to school and displayed around the cafeteria so families could view them.

Desert Meadows Principal J.P. Ketcham was honored with the district’s Pinnacle of Leadership Award at the September Governing Board meeting. This award honors administrators for their exceptional leadership, outstanding accomplishment, and dedicated service to Laveen’s students and community.
Laveen schools serve free or reduced-price lunches to families that qualify based on income requirements.
Families must reapply annually. If you qualified last year your eligibility expires September 17. Please reapply at EZMealApp.com or complete a paper application at your school’s front office or cafeteria. All families are encouraged to apply. Applications are processed year round and are kept confidential.
Families that meet federal income levels may qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Lunches are currently priced at $2.30; the reduced price is $.40. Breakfast is served free to all students, regardless of eligibility, before school each day.
In addition to receiving a discount on meal prices, completed applications provide additional funds to the district in the form of grant money. Funding for prevention programs, parent training, and interventions for students in reading and math is often based on the number of students qualified for free or reduced–price lunch.
Visit our Child Nutrition page for more information.
