Desert Meadows School was recently featured on KNOW99 for using earth-friendly, biodegradable trays in the cafeteria.

Desert Meadows was the first school to pilot the trays which are now used in all Laveen schools. The trays replaced the Styrofoam ones previously used.

The trays are manufactured in the United States by Trellis Earth and are made of bioplastic, which is a blend of sustainable plant material and plastic. They are biodegradable and recyclable. According to Trellis Earth, the trays are made of 70% renewable materials compared to Styrofoam which is 100% petroleum based, and not recyclable.
