Preis_Steve_11It is time once again to start planning for the new school year. We have received preliminary data from the state regarding AzMERIT and AIMS. We will be sending your child’s scores in early July after they have been released to the public. Early results show that we grew in almost every grade level, and that none of our third graders will be retained for not meeting state expectations for Move on When Reading (MOWR). This is certainly good news, but still leaves us with a great deal of work to do as move into our third year of implementing the Arizonas College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS). With your continued support we will continue to grow and improve!

This year we will enjoy technology devices with a one to one ratio in every classroom. This is due to your continued support at the ballot box, where last year you approved a capital override. In order to fully enjoy the benefits of technology it is best when families have access to the internet. If you do not have access to the internet at this time, I encourage you to explore the Cox Connect2Compete initiative. This offer provides discounted internet services to those who meet the requirements including support from the Federal Free Lunch Program, TANF, SNAP and those in public and section 8 housing. There is a link above on in the News Section for you to access more information and the application.

Meet the Teacher night is August 4 from 5:00 – 7:00. Besides meeting your child’s teacher you can purchase gently used uniforms from PTA for only $1 a piece in the gym. While in the gym you can also hear about the clubs and activities that are planned for this school year, and take the time to join PTA. I cannot wait for the year to begin on Monday, August 8!

Why choose Desert Meadows?

Desert Meadows School strives to help our students improve academically every year as well as to develop their social skills so that they can become productive members of the community.

To facilitate learning we focus on first developing fluent readers through systematic phonics instruction. As the students progress through the years, teachers follow a curriculum map ensuring the students are acquiring the higher level learning skills that will lead to their academic success. We use data to target areas that need interventions which are provided through daily interventions, tutoring, and sometimes Saturday school. Interventions do not stop in academic areas that are lacking, but  include students who are ready for more rigorous challenges. By seventh grade our goal is to teach students algebra and by eighth grade they will move on to geometry.

Our social goals focus on teaching expectations that will assist our students in all walks of life. Our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program not only sets those expectations, but teaches the students what they look like.

Meet our exceptional students & teachers

Desert Meadows is one of Laveen's 7 great elementary schools. See what makes them outstanding.
